WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University women's basketball team tips-off its 32nd season of competition against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center this afternoon. The meeting is the sixth all-time between the schools, with the Colonials holding a 5-0 edge in the series.
GW has won two meetings each at Smith Center and on the road versus UMBC and posted a neutral site victory over the Retrievers at the Sun & Fun Tournament hosted by Florida International University in 1994.
This will be the 13th time GW has opened its season at home, including the seventh time in the past nine years. The Colonials are 16-15 all-time in season openers, 10-2 in openers at the Smith Center. Head coach Joe McKeown has been victorious in 10 of his 17 season-opening contests.
Head coach Joe McKeown's scheduling philosophy is simple: "The best play the best." The Colonials' non-conference slate once again resembles a "who's who" of women's college basketball programs. GW will face 13 teams that advanced to the postseason in 2006, including seven teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament.
Opponents in 2006 NCAA Tournament - Coppin State, TCU, Maryland, Tennessee, Liberty, Georgia, Temple
Opponents in 2006 Women's NIT - James Madison, Villanova, Stony Brook, Richmond, Xavier, Charlotte, Saint Joseph's
Despite having just one player in her final year of eligibility, the GW team boasts a combined 202 starts among its 11 returning letterwinners. The Colonials also return the bulk of their statistics from last year:
Scoring - 79.0% (1624 of 2055)
Rebounding - 78.2% (973 of 1244)
Assists - 79.2% (358 of 452)
