WASHINGTON, DC - With the upcoming 2006-07 basketball season roughly a month away, George Washington University head women's coach Joe McKeown has released his teams' schedule, which will include match-ups against a total of 13 programs that reached the postseason last year.
The Colonials will face seven teams (Coppin State, TCU, Maryland, Tennessee, Temple, Georgia and Liberty) that played in the NCAA Tournament last March as well as six teams (Saint Joseph's, Stony Brook, Charlotte, James Madison, Xavier and Villanova) that were awarded bids to the Postseason National Invitation Tournament. GW will participate in two tournaments, the BTI Classic hosted by defending national champion Maryland, November 17-19, and the San Diego Surf `N Slam Hoop Classic hosted by San Diego and San Diego State, December 28 and 30.
The 32nd season of women's basketball tips-off at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center on November 10 against Maryland-Baltimore County, followed by a home tilt versus Coppin State, which won the MEAC and qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season, two days later.
GW begins its play in the three-day, round robin BTI Classic against Arizona at the Comcast Center in College Park, MD, on November 17. That game will feature a match-up between two of the tallest sister tandems in Division I basketball in GW's Jessica Adair (6-4) and Jazmine Adair (6-3) and UA's Beatrice (6-7) and Suzy (6-6) Bofia. The Colonials will face NCAA participant TCU at 2:00 pm November 18 and the host Terrapins at 3:30 pm November 19.
The team will split its remaining eight non-conference games between the Smith Center and road venues. WNIT participants James Madison and Villanova visit Smith Center on November 25 and 29, respectively, while 10-time defending Big South champion Liberty and Auburn invade Foggy Bottom on December 10 and 16. GW is at WNIT qualifier Stony Brook on December 2, before traveling to Knoxville, TN, on December 7 to battle perennial national power Tennessee for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
Georgia, which advanced to the "Sweet 16" of last year's NCAA Tournament, will be the Colonials' first-round challenger in the Aztec Bracket of the Surf `N Slam Hoop Classic on December 28, with Brown or San Diego State as potential second-round opponents in the non-conference finale on December 30.
The Atlantic 10 Conference will experiment with a 14-game schedule for the first time since the 1992-93 season. Rather than play home-and-home series with three teams, as was the case last year, GW will play only Richmond twice and all other A-10 opponents once. The Colonials will battle Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Duquesne, St. Bonaventure and defending A-10 Tournament champion Temple at the Smith Center, while facing Fordham, Xavier, Dayton, La Salle, Charlotte and Saint Louis on the road. The January 21 meeting at Xavier will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
Xavier's Cintas Center is the site of this year's Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship, to be held March 2-5.
McKeown returns four starters and 11 letterwinners from a team that finished 23-9 overall and made the program's 13th NCAA Tournament appearance in 16 seasons last winter. The Colonials finished the season ranked No. 25 in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll and are ranked No. 21 in Street & Smith's Magazine's Preseason Top 25.
