GW Completes Successful Two-Day Meet At American

Washington, DC - The Colonials swimming and diving team finished up their two day meet with Catholic and American at American on Saturday. Eight different Colonials won individual events on the day, while senior Jonathan Sabin and sophomore Tom Pullen won two events apiece for the men.
On the men's side, Sabin swept the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events in 54.14 and 1:59.99 respectively. Pullen swept the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events in 1:02.04 and 2:20.63 respectively. Also victorious for the men were senior Jeff Cohn, who won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.86, and freshman Cascade Tuholske, who won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:59.11. Cohn also took third in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.29, while Tuholske took fourth in 100-yard backstroke.
Freshman Rick Rogers notched a pair of second place finishes in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events in 1:03.28 and 2:21.32 respectively. Freshman Zach Hunter took second in the 1650-yard freestyle (1 mile) in 17:41.39. Other notable performers were freshman Stephen Cose, who took third in the 100-yard backstroke in 57.74 and junior Mark DeSimone, who took third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.23.
On the women's side freshmen Christa Gorenflo and Emily Leik, as well as sophomore Ariana Berdini and senior Shannon Ma all took individual events. Gorenflo took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.38 with fellow freshman Katrina Timlin right after in second in 1:10.66. Leik dominated the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:15.97. The Colonials swept the 200-yard breaststroke with Berdini taking it in 2:29.37. Sophomore Lauren Fuchs and Timlin came in second and third respectively in 2:30.82 and 2:32.53. Ma also led the sweep in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.63. Sophomore Jessica Miga and junior Molly Moss followed shortly after in times of 1:02.04 and 1:02.68 respectively.
Leik also took second in the 100-yard breastroke in 1:02.82 and third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.44. Miga captured her second second place finish of the day in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.83. Moss followed up on her third place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a second place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:16.83.
Also turning in solid performances for GW were sophomore Luciana Maggiolo, who took third in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.75 and freshman Cissey Ye, who also took third in the 1650-yard (1-mile) freestyle in 18:37.19.
The Colonials will have a few weeks off before they travel to George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, to compete at the GMU Patriot Invitational on November 17-19.
