Men's Soccer Victim of Late Goal at Richmond

RICHMOND, VA - The George Washington men's soccer team peppered Richmond's defense with 22 shots, but a Spiders' goal with less than three minutes remaining dealt the Colonials a 1-0 conference loss at First Market Stadium on Tuesday.
GW (5-8-3, 2-4-2 A-10) is still in the hunt for an Atlantic 10 Tournament bid, but must win its final match at La Salle on Sunday and get favorable results from several other league matches this weekend. Richmond (9-5-3, 6-0-1 A-10), which moved into a first-place tie in the league standings with Saint Louis, is unbeaten in its last seven matches.
The Colonials put 11 of their 22 total shots on target and controlled play for the majority of the match, but failed to capitalize on any of the opportunities. Richmond's Brennan Lincoln netted the game-winner in the 88th minute, heading in his own rebound in front of the GW net.
Junior goalkeeper Greg Yahr, who faced 17 shots, tied his career-high of seven saves for the fifth time this season. Yahr entered the match ranked sixth in the country with a 5.5 saves-per-game average. Richmond's Matt Cully made 11 stops to keep the Colonials at bay.
Freshman Andrew Stadler, who was named the league's Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday, led the GW offense with six shots, including three on goal. Senior Joseph Siegel and juniors Thomas Stuber and Greg McKay posted four shots apiece.
GW concludes its regular season with a 1:00 pm match at La Salle on Sunday, October 29. Any Xavier victory or two wins by either Massachusetts or Fordham would eliminate the Colonials regardless of Sunday's result.
