Rams Too Tough for Men's Soccer

WASHINGTON, DC - In a meeting between teams that have won the last four Atlantic 10 Tournament titles, the George Washington men's soccer team allowed a goal in each half of a 2-0 loss to Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 Conference action at Mount Vernon Field on Sunday afternoon.
GW (4-5-1, 1-1-0 A-10), which won the league tournament in 2002 and 2004, had its two-match winning streak snapped by a Rams' team that has now won its last three matches. Rhode Island is the defending A-10 Tournament champion and also won the crown in 2003.
URI (5-3-3, 2-0-0 A-10) forward Jeffrey Gonsalves scored his league leading eighth goal of the season in the 40th minute for the decisive score. Gonsalves played the ball into the goal with his thigh following Steve Mellen's head-ball cross. Danleigh Borman, who picked out Mellen with a service from the left side, was also credited with an assist.
The Rams tacked on an insurance goal in the 68th minute when Lukasz Tumicz's cross found Dawid Badecki at the penalty spot and Badecki buried a one-touch volley into the left corner. Tumicz leads Rhode Island with five assists.
Freshman Andrew Stadler had perhaps the best opportunity to score for the Colonials in the 31st minute. Junior Thomas Stuber sent a cross into the box from the right side and Stadler out-jumped a Rams' defender and sent a header toward the lower right corner, but the ball hit the post and trickled over the end-line. Stadler and junior Matt Davis (Upper Marlboro, MD/Grace Brethren Christian School) led GW with three shots apiece.
GW was out-shot, 20-18, including a 9-5 deficit in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Greg Yahr tied a career-high with seven saves. Chris Pennock turned away five shots for the Rams.
The Colonials are on the road for their next four matches beginning with a league battle at Richmond on Friday, October 6, at 7:00 pm.
