WASHINGTON, DC - The Colonials (13-5, 6-1) hit the road on Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. start against Richmond (8-12, 3-5) at the Robins Center. The Colonials have won 11 of their last 13 games and are tied with Charlotte for first place in the Atlantic 10. This is the 12th meeting between the teams and the Colonials have won the last 10 and hold an 11-1 all-time advantage against the Spiders.
The Colonials had been ranked No. 25 in both national polls before losing their last game on the road, 55-53, at Massachusetts last Sunday. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak and remains the team's only defeat of 2006. GW had won its first five conference games and is currently tied for first with Charlotte, which has an identical conference and overall record.
GW's RPI is 29th in the country compared to Richmond which is 150th. The Colonials have played the 34th toughest strength of schedule, while Richmond's schedule is the 95th most difficult so far. GW leads Richmond in most statistical categories and has a scoring margin that is 11 points per game better than the Spiders. Richmond shoots better from behind the arc and gets two more assists per game but GW has a decided advantage in almost every other stat.
Richmond has not beaten the GW since November 23, 1982, in the second meeting between the teams. The teams played twice in 1982 and then not again until 1991, the only meeting of the 1990's when the Colonials started their current 10-game winning streak. The teams met last season in the semi-final game of the A-10 Tournament hosted at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center with GW winning, 63-44.
After their game in Richmond the Colonials stay on the road with a game next Friday at Xavier's Cintas Center at 7:00 p.m. The women play in Cincinnati, OH a day after the men play the Musketeers in a men's game televised by ESPN 2. The Colonials do not return home until Monday, February 6th when GW takes on new A-10 opponent Saint Louis for the first time at 7:00 p.m. at Smith Center. GW has won its last nine games at home since losing to then-No. 1 Tennessee on December 7th, 2005.
