WASHINGTON, DC - Former George Washington women's basketball star Cathy Joens signed a professional contract to play for Israeli champion Elizur Ramala on August 9. Last season, Joens competed as a member of CB Puig d'en Valls of the Spanish Premiere League and she is currently touring with Athletes in Action.
Joens averaged 13.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per outing for CB Puig d'en Valls. She ranked second in the league in three-point shooting, knocking down 44 percent of her attempts from beyond the arc. Joens also averaged 1.6 steals per contest. After concluding her season in Spain, Joens was invited to attend to attend the 2005 Washington Mystics' training camp, but did not make the squad's final roster.
Joens won back-to-back Atlantic 10 Player of the Year awards at GW and earned Associated Press (AP) All-America honors following a senior campaign that saw her average 19.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game in 2003-04. In addition, she was selected as the A-10's Student-Athlete of Year and was finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Joens finished her GW career ranked third all-time in points (1,802) and holds the school record for career three-pointers with 291.
She was selected with the 30th pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty.
