WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington men's soccer Head Coach George Lidster teamed with English Premiere League champion Chelsea and Britannia Soccer to host a youth clinic on Thursday, July 28 at the Mount Vernon Athletics Complex. The clinic was held in conjunction with Chelsea's exhibition match versus MLS champion DC United tonight at FedEX Field in Landover, MD.
The clinic featured a skills session in the morning and games in the afternoon. Chelsea's football development youth coaches ran the camp and refereed the afternoon matches.
All 120 campers received a certificate, t-shirt, pin, ball and a ticket to tonight's exhibition, which begins at 8:00 pm and is being billed as the "Clash of Champions." In addition, some lucky campers were selected to be in the tunnel beneath the stadium when the two teams take field.
"It's great for GW to have Chelsea hold their clinic here," Lidster said. "But most of all it's great for the kids. They are all from Washington, DC and the surrounding area and it's good for them to get some first-class coaching and the opportunity to be around a professional club."
"When it was announced that the first team was coming here to play DC United, my first call was to George," Chelsea's Director of Football Development Shaun Gore said. "Mount Vernon is a fantastic facility and I said to George `Hey, lets try and make this happen.'"
Chelsea posted a 29-1-8 record on its way to its first English Premiere League championship in 50 years. The Blues are currently on a preseason world tour in preparation for their upcoming season.
