WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University men's soccer team will open the 2005 campaign against fellow 2004 NCAA Championship participant American University in the annual DC College Cup, held at Georgetown University, on Friday, Sept. 2 at 12:00 p.m. The Colonials' 2005 slate also features eight home matches, including a showdown with current ACC and former Atlantic 10 rival Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
In addition to its pairing with the Eagles, GW will also take on Howard (Sept. 4) in the fifth edition of the College Cup, a local tournament that features the four Division I men's soccer programs in the District. The Colonials follow up their appearance in the event with two road games (at Delaware on Sept. 11 and at George Mason on Sept. 17) before beginning its home schedule with matches versus Towson on Sept. 21 and Rider on Sept. 24. GW closes out the month of September at Lehigh on Sept. 28.
Following the Colonials' clash with the Hokies on October 1, they begin Atlantic 10 play with a road trip to Ohio for games at Dayton (Oct. 7) and at Xavier (Oct. 9). GW returns home for a pair of matches versus Saint Joseph's (Oct 14) and Temple (Oct. 16). Another weekend road trip (at Massachusetts on Oct. 21 and at Rhode Island on Oct. 23) follows, before the Colonials end the regular season with three home league matches. GW will host A-10 newcomer Saint Louis on Oct. 28 and Duquesne on Oct. 30 before taking on La Salle on Nov. 5 in the season finale.
The 2005 Atlantic 10 Championship will be held in St. Louis, MO from Nov. 10-13 as the Bilikens will host the tournament in their first year as a member of the conference.
GW will also play two preseason matches. Coach George Lidster's squad will host Richmond on Aug. 21 at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The Colonials have also set aside Aug. 27 for a preseason contest against a yet to be determined opponent.
GW has been crowned the Atlantic 10 champions in two of the last three years (2002 and 2004). They finished last season with a 10-9-4 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, losing to 16th-seeded Virginia Commonwealth, 2-0.
