WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University gymnastics team had 11 student-athletes earn 2005 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) All-Academic honors, the conference office announced on Monday, March 21. The Colonials, who are competing in their first year as a member of the EAGL under 20th-year head coach Margie Foster-Cunningham, had the fifth-most honorees among the eight-team league.
The EAGL honored 95 gymnasts, which is the highest total in the 10-year history of the conference. In 1999, 2000, and 2004, 88 gymnasts were honored.
In order to be named to the EAGL All-Academic team, student-athletes must have achieved a gradepoint average of 3.0 or higher in the two previous semesters. Freshmen were also eligible if they earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester.
Rutgers led all of the EAGL teams with 18 honorees. North Carolina was second with all 16 of its gymnasts as All-Academic Team selections, while North Carolina State and Maryland tied for third (12). Each of the eight EAGL schools had at least eight gymnasts honored.
GW (14-13) is back in action next weekend when it travels to Raleigh, NC, for its first East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships on Friday, March 25, at 6 p.m., hosted by NC State.
