WASHINGTON, DC - The GW men's soccer team (1-5-1) takes to the road again this weekend. The Colonials will begin the Atlantic 10 portion of their schedule with matches at La Salle on Friday, Oct. 1 at 3:00 p.m. and a contest at Fordham on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1:00 p.m.
The Colonials are in the midst of four-game losing streak and haven't posted a triumph in their last five outings. GW suffered its last four-game losing streak in 2003, but hasn't lost five consecutive matches since the 1999 campaign. However the good news is that GW has fared well against this weekend's opponents recently. GW has won three of its four pairings with La Salle and the Colonials have won its last five encounters with the Rams, including four shutouts.
Juniors Jon Allen and Andre Chapman still lead the squad with five points each and junior goalkeeper Derek Biss made seven saves against George Mason in the team's most recent outing, tying his season high.
La Salle enters Friday's matchup with a 4-2-1 record and are unbeaten in its last four matches, including a 1-0 triumph at Philadelphia in its most recent outing on Sept. 20. Defense has carried the Explorers so far this season. Their defensive unit has recorded three shutouts, which is tied for the most in the league. La Salle also ranks second in the conference in goals-against average at 1.31.
La Salle keeper Stash Graham is the centerpiece of the defense. He is tied for the A-10 lead in shutouts with two and ranks second in the conference in saves per game (5.67). On offense, Scott Golden and Ryan Moseley lead the club with three goals each and Golden is tops on the squad with eight total points.
Fordham is 2-5-0, but has won its last two contests after the beginning the year 0-5-0. The Rams will host Richmond on Friday, Oct. 1 before taking on the Colonials on Sunday. Fordham has outscored its last two opponents (Army and Iona), 7-1.
Rams' sophomore Anthony Akande is the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after scoring two goals in Fordham's win against Iona on Sept. 25.
