WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's soccer team (1-4-1) will look to stop a three-game losing streak when it hosts George Mason (3-3-0) in its 2004 home-opener on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 4:00 p.m.
The Colonials haven't won since they defeated Howard, 5-0, at the DC College Cup on Sept. 6. GW followed up that performance with a double-overtime tie against Radford on Sept. 11. Since then, the Colonials have lost three in a row and have been outscored 9-2 , including a 3-0 loss at UMBC on Sept. 22.
A home match might just be the offensive spark the Colonials need. GW outscored its opponents 22-13 at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex last season and the Colonials posted a 5-2 home mark in 2003.
Juniors Andre Chapman and Jon Allen lead the Colonials with five points each and freshman goalkeeper Greg Yahr made his first career start versus UMBC and made two saves.
Mason is the 10th-ranked team in the South Atlantic Region according to the NSCAA regional poll that was released on Sept. 21. The Patriots are coming off a split at the St. John's Classic. The Patriots shut out No. 10 Saint Louis, 3-0, on Sept. 17 before losing to No. 23 Seton Hall, 5-3, on Sept. 19. Teba McKnight leads GMU with nine points and he was named the CAA Player of the Week after notching a goal and two assists at the event. Mason also has two players, Matt Mendy and Damien Quinn, who have tallied six points each John O'Hara has played every minute in goal for the Patriots. He owns a 1.67 goals-against average and has recorded two shutouts.
The Colonials lost to George Mason on the road last season, 3-2.
Saturday's match is the second game of a doubleheader at Mount Vernon. GW's women's soccer team will try and get back on the winning track against Atlantic 10 foe Richmond at 1:00 p.m.
