Sept. 22, 2004
WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington has announced its women's basketball schedule for the 2004-05 campaign, which will begin on Friday, Nov. 19 at District rival Georgetown. The Colonials will play their first three games in the span of five days, including a contest with perennial women's basketball power Tennessee in Knoxville, TN on Tuesday, Nov. 23. In between those two dates, GW will host the Pirates of East Carolina in its home-opener on Sunday, Nov. 21.
GW will play at least two games that will be televised by the Atlantic 10 Television Network, which reaches more than 20 million homes. The network will air GW's contest at Xavier on Jan. 16 and its pairing at Richmond on Feb. 13. The Colonials could play as many as four TV games if they advance to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship, which will be telecasted by A-10 TV and the Atlantic 10 Championship final, which will air on ESPN2.
The Colonials will take on five teams that earned bids to the NCAA Tournament last year (Tennessee, Boston College, North Carolina State, Temple, and Villanova) and three squads that participated in the 2004 WNIT (Richmond, Xavier, and Saint Joseph's) this season. The non-conference portion of the schedule is highlighted by home matchups with NCAA Tournament participants North Carolina State (Dec. 21) and Villanova (December 1). The GW/Villanova game is part of a doubleheader with the GW men's team, which will host Mount St. Mary's that same night. Also, as part of its non-conference slate, the Colonials will head west for encounters with Oregon (Dec. 4) and BYU (Dec. 6).
The Atlantic 10 portion of the schedule features home-and-home series dates with West Division foes Dayton, Xavier, Richmond, La Salle, and Duquesne. The Colonials will also host A-10 East Division rivals Massachusetts, St. Bonaventure, and Rhode Island.
In addition to regular-season action, George Washington's Smith Center will serve as the home for the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championship on March 4-7. The last time GW hosted an Atlantic 10 Tournament final, the Colonials defeated Rhode Island, 56-49, on March 10, 2003 to claim their third conference crown. This season will mark just the second time that GW will host every round of the event. The Colonials also hosted the entire tournament in 1993.
Head Coach Joe McKeown returns eight letterwinners from a squad that posted a 22-8 record a year ago and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time. Leading the way is senior All-America candidate Anna Montañana. Montañana earned first-team Atlantic 10 All-Conference accolades last season and became just the second GW basketball player -- men's or women's -- to record a triple-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists against La Salle on January 31, 2004.
