Colonials' Sign Four Recruits

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington's women's basketball team has received commitments from four of the top players in the country, announced head coach Joe McKeown. Kimberly Beck of College Park, GA, Sara Jo Lawrence of Orange, VA, Lora Mitchell of Orem, UT and Lisa Steele of Blackwood, NJ will all join the Colonials for the 2004-05 season.
Beck is a 5'8" point guard from Woodward Academy. She was named her Region's Player of the Year for the second season in a row after averaging 11.2 points, 7.8 assists and 4.5 steals per game. In addition, she shot 50 percent from the field and almost 45 percent from three-point range during her senior campaign.
Lawrence is a 5'11" guard from Orange County High School. She was named District Player of the Year on her way to a First Team All-State selection in Virginia. At 23.2 points per game, she was Virginia's leading scorer fo both men and women, and she also grabbed 8.3 rebounds per contest. Lawrence was a McDonald's All-America nominee after her senior season.
Mitchell is a 6'1" forward from Mountain View High School in Utah. Her 13.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game earned her First Team All-State honors, but it is her 4.6 blocks per game that will remind Colonials' fans of recently departed Ugo Oha.
Steele is a 5'11" guard from Highland High School, who is known for her outstanding shooting. She averaged 23.6 points per game on over 58 percent shooting during her senior season. She also grabbed seven rebounds and tallied 2.5 steals per game. She was named First Team All-State, Associated Press All-Region Second Team and was on the Philadelphia Inquirer's First Team.
These four, along with Jessica Simmonds, who is eligible in 2004-05 after transferring from Providence College, will need to have an impact as the Colonials aim for their sixth straight 20-win season.
