Joens Named WBCA/Kodak All-America Regional Finalist

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington's Cathy Joens has been named WBCA/Kodak All-America Regional Finalist for Region 1. The six-foot shooting guard from Irvine, CA led the Colonials in scoring at 19.4 for the season and was one of only two players in the country to finish the season averaging over 19 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals a game.
Joens helped the Colonials to the Atlantic 10 regular season title and a 22-8 record. She finished her career third on GW's all-time scoring list at 1,802 points and first in all-time three-point field goals made at 291. This season, she scored over 20 points in a game 14 times and over 30 points three times. She also set the single-game three-point field goals made record with eight versus Richmond earlier in the season. Joens finished this season in the top 15 of 10 categories kept by the Atlantic 10 including second in scoring average, first in three-poing field goals made and third in steals.
The two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Year was also named Student-Athlete of the Year by the A-10 as she continues to pursue a master's degree in health promotion-disease prevention.
Joining Joens on the District 1 team were all BIG EAST players including Jacqueline Batteast (Notre Dame), Rebekkah Brunson (Georgetown), Amber Jacobs (Boston College), Cappie Pondexter (Rutgers) and Diana Taurasi (Connecticut). WBCA member coaches in each of the eight WBCA geographical districts vote for the final team and Player of the Year, which will be announced at the Women's Final Four in New Orleans on April 3, 2004.
Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as an amateur sport for women and girls.
Kodak recognizes the accomplishments of young athletes and the positive recognition they bring to their school by displaying their talents on the basketball floor. Kodak has sponsored the Kodak Women's All-America Basketball Team for 30 years.
