GW to Face DePaul In NCAA Tournament First Round

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University women's basketball team will play the DePaul Blue Demons in the first round of the Women's NCAA Tournament on Saturday, March 20 in Tallahassee, FL. The Colonials are the Midwest Region's eighth seed and will face DePaul, the nine seed, for the second time in the NCAA's first round. GW defeated the Blue Demons, 87-79, on March 17, 1995.
GW, the Atlantic 10's West Division Champions, will come into the NCAA Tournament with a 22-7 record. The Colonials are led by Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Year and Kodak/WBCA All-America Team finalist Cathy Joens and Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, Ugo Oha. This is the Colonials 11th tournament selection in the past 14 years and they have gone 12-10 overall in the tournament and 9-1 in opening round games. The Colonials are 2-2 versus DePaul in the school's history, winning twice at home, while falling to DePaul once on the road and once on a neutral site.
DePaul will enter the tournament after going 22-6 in the regular season and finishing fourth in Conference USA. The Blue Demons are 3-8 all-time in NCAA Tournament play. DePaul is currently the nation's top scoring offense at 85.3 points per game and has a roster that contains two Kodak/WBCA All-America Team finalists in Khara and Charlene Smith, who are cousins.
The other match up in Tallahassee will be between the Midwest's No. 1 seed, Tennessee, and the No. 16 seed Colgate. GW is 0-3 versus the Lady Vols including a 65-51 defeat in December of this season. The Colonials are 1-0 versus Colgate with the lone game coming in 1991.
