MISSION, KS - George Washington junior Ben Mortimer has been selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Atlantic Region Third Team in a vote conducted by a group of select coaches.
Mortimer finished fourth on the team with five goals last season and was key part of GW's run to the Atlantic 10 Championship and subsequent berth in the NCAA Tournament. He helped anchor a Colonials' defense, which posted seven shutouts in 2004, including six in GW's last eight games. With Mortimer's help the Colonials also recorded a 1.20 goals-against average for the year.
Against Duquesne in the A-10 semifinals, Mortimer converted on the Colonials' final penalty kick to propel the team into the tournament's final match. GW recorded two shutouts in the conference tournament, including a 2-0 victory against Temple in the championship tilt. For his performance in the three matches, Mortimer was picked to the All-Championship Team.
The Colonials finished 2004 with a 10-9-4 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship for the second time in school history.
