GW's Pops Mensah-Bonsu Wins A-10 Player Award

WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington junior Pops Mensah-Bonsu has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week for men's basketball, the league office has announced. This is the first Player of the Week award for Mensah-Bonsu of his career and the first for a GW player since Chris Monroe on Jan. 25, 2003.
A 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward, Mensah-Bonsu converted 25-35 (.714) from the field in GW's three games last week (Fairfield, Mount St. Mary's, Michigan St.). The London native scored his career-high 27 points on 11-12 FGs, 5-7 FTs and four blocks in GW's 81-58 victory over the Mount at Smith Center on Dec. 1.
He scored 23 points with six rebounds and four blocked shots against No. 9 Michigan State in the opening-round game of the BB&T Classic on Dec. 4 at MCI Center.
Mensah-Bonsu's statistics for the week: three games, 70 points on 25-35 FGs (.714), 20-30 FTs (.667), 24 rebounds, nine blocks, four assists and three steals in 80 total minutes.
Pops leads the Colonials in scoring (17.5 ppg), rebounding (6.2 rpg), FG% (.661), and blocked shots with 15.
GW (5-1, 0-0 A-10) travels to St. Francis (PA) on Saturday, Dec. 11, for a 7:00 p.m. game at Loretto, PA.
