GW Has Sights Set on A-10 Tournament

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW men's soccer squad (6-8-3, 5-3-2 Atlantic 10) will close out the 2004 regular season on the road Saturday, Nov. 6 at Richmond at 7:30 p.m. The Colonials can lock up a spot in the A-10 Championship Tournament with a victory.
The Colonials are currently tied fourth in the league standings with 17 points. The top six teams will receive bids to the conference tournament. Duquesne, Dayton, and Temple have already secured berths in the championship. The Colonials can obtain a bid with a win; a Massachusetts win or tie versus Rhode Island; or a La Salle loss to Fordham.
GW has won its last five matches and posted two shutouts last week. The Colonials defeated Temple, 1-0, on Oct. 29 and blanked Saint Joseph's on Oct. 31, 2-0. Junior goalkeeper Derek Biss earned co-Atlantic10 Player of the Week honors for his roll in the two victories.
Junior Jon Allen leads the club with 16 points. Junior Frank Ambrosio netted the game-winner versus Saint Joseph's and has three goals in the Colonials' last three outings. Sophomore Jeremiah Burke assisted on Ambrosio's golden goal to record his first point of the season.
Biss is sporting a 0.80 goals-against average during the winning streak and Ambrosio has scored nine points during the stretch. The Colonials have outscored their opponents, 13-4, in those matches and outshot their foes, 73-45.
Richmond is 3-12-2 overall and 2-7-1 in the league. The Spiders are 1-7 in their last eight contests and have been mathematically eliminated from postseason competition.
Colin Vint leads the squad with 15 points and Steven Wolfe has 14. Wolfe also ranks third in the conference with 50 shot attempts. Eric Sciocchetti has started 15 games in goal for Richmond and holds a 2.30 goals-against average. He is tops in the conference with 102 saves.
The Colonials are 1-1-1 in their last three meetings with the Spiders.
