WASHINGTON, DC - GW women's basketball coach Joe McKeown today announced that seniors Anna Montañana, Liz Dancause, and Jessica Simmonds will serve as the squad's tri-captains when the Colonials take the floor for the upcoming season.
Montañana, a preseason All-American, is one of two returning starters for the Colonials this year. She started all 30 games for GW in 2003-04 and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team. She ranked second in the A-10 in rebounds per game (7.6) and steals per game (2.33) last season. In addition, Montañana finished third in the league in assists average with 5.37 helpers per outing. She averaged 12.0 points per contest in 2003-04 and established a new personal best with 21 points in GW's win against Dayton.
Dancause joined Montañana in the starting lineup 26 times last season and also appeared in every game. She averaged 3.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, while ranking second on the team with 13 blocked shots. The forward set a career high with 11 points in the 2003-04 regular-season finale against Temple.
Simmonds has yet to appear in a GW uniform, but has two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out last season following her transfer from Providence College. While with the Friars, Simmonds earned Big East Rookie Team honors as a freshman in 2001-02 and led the team in rebounding in twice. She averaged 8.4 points per game in 2001-02 and 9.7 points per outing in 2002-03.
Fans can catch their first glimpse of year's GW squad on Saturday, Nov. 6 when the team hits the floor for an exhibition contest versus Everyone's Internet at 1:00 p.m. at the Smith Center. The Colonials' regular season tips off on Friday, Nov. 19 at Georgetown.
