A conversation with Lora Mitchell is GWsports.com's second Q & A with a freshman member of the women's basketball team. Mitchell was a three-sport star at Mountain View High School in Orem, UT. She averaged a double-double during her senior season (13.4 ppg, 11.2 rpg) and was a two-time all-state and all-region honoree. Here is what she had to say:
Why did you decide to come to GW? "My decision to come here was a long process after I decided that I didn't want to stay on the West Coast. I looked at some other schools, but GW was the right fit. I liked the area, the team, and the coaches."
What is your favorite Washington, DC attraction and why? "I really like the Lincoln Memorial. It's a testament to one of the truly great and most influential presidents we've ever had."
What do you enjoy doing when you aren't studying or playing basketball? "I like to spend time hanging out with friends and participating in my religious activities. I also enjoy listening to music and staying in touch with my friends and family via phone."
What are your goals for the upcoming season? "I played on a terrific high school team and got a championship ring every year. I expect this year to be no different. I want to win an A-10 title and go deep into the NCAA Tournament. We are a good team and have good chemistry, so I think we can do it."
What has been the most difficult part of adjusting to college life? "The biggest adjustment for me has been time management. It's hard to go from practice to class all sweaty and tired. It's also hard to feel rested for practice because some nights you don't get much sleep."
What is one thing your teammates would be surprised to find out about you? "I almost played college volleyball. That's one of the reasons I signed with GW late."
If you could script your collegiate debut how would it go? "We would have a solid opening game and make a strong statement as to the kind of team we are. Everyone would play together and it would be a total team effort."
How would you describe your game? "I think I'm a quick player. I like to shoot the fadeaway jumper and I like to think of myself as someone who can stick her man on defense and rebound well."
