Colonials Gunning for Atlantic 10 Championship Berth

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW men's soccer team (2-8-3, 1-3-2 A-10) will host Xavier on Friday, Oct. 22 at 3:00 p.m. and Dayton on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1:00 p.m. at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The Colonials are currently tied for 10th place in the conference, but are eyeing a potential berth in the league's championship tournament.
The Colonials ended their 10-match winless streak with a 3-1 triumph at St. Bonaventure on Oct. 17. GW is tied with Fordham for 10th in the league standings heading into this week's games. The Colonials have five points, but are just four points out of the sixth position. The top six teams in the A-10 make the postseason tournament.
Junior Jon Allen led the way with a personal-best two goals in GW's win over the Bonnies. He is tied for sixth in the A-10 with 14 points and is tied for second in the conference with four goals in A-10 competiton Junior Andre Chapman is second on the squad with nine total points.
Junior goalkeeper Derek Biss made three saves against St. Bonaventure to notch his second win of the year. Biss leads the Colonials with 37 saves and owns a 1.44 goals-against average, the sixth-best mark in the A-10.
Xavier is tied for fifth in the conference standings with 10 points. The Musketeers lost both of their contests last weekend, falling to Massachusetts, 3-2, in overtime and losing to Rhode Island, 3-2, in regulation. Xavier owns a 4-9-1 overall record and is 2-3-1 in the A-10.
Nick Frasher is the Musketeers' top scorer and is tied for fourth in the conference with 16 points. He is tied for second in the league with seven goals and has launched 36 shots on the season. Brian Schaeper has notched two shutouts in 12 games between the posts in 2004 and ranks seventh in the A-10 in saves per game (4.58). He has made 55 saves on the season.
Dayton has won seven of its last nine matches after beginning the year 0-3. The Flyers are 4-2-0 in A-10 play and stand in second place in the conference standings behind league leader Duquesne. Dayton recorded a 3-2 triumph in its most recent outing, at Rhode Island on Oct. 17.
Tye Stebbins is tied for second in the Atlantic 10 with seven goals and 16 total points. George Nanchoff ranks second in the league with six assists and Omar Jarun has scored five goals this season, including three game-winners.
The Colonials have won the last six meetings with Xavier dating back to the 1998 season and have lost two of their last three encounters with the Flyers.
