FAYETTEVILLE, PA - GW's Michael Ball (Potomac, MD/Churchill) tied a 45-year-old school record with a six-under-par 66 in the first round of the Verizon Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship Friday-Sunday at the par-72, 7,009-yard Iron Forge Course at Penn National Golf Club. He led the field of 55 after the first round but finished the tournament in a tie for seventh with a 54-hole total 214 (66-72-73). He was six strokes off the pace set by tournament champion John Rusk of Temple (208). Rhode Island won the team title with a nine-under-par 855.
Ball's first-round 66 tied teammate Thomas Blankvoort (Curacao, Netherlands Antilles) who carded a 66 in the morning round of the Rehoboth Beach Invitational a week ago (April 15) at the par-72, 6,615-yard Kings Creek Country Club on the Delaware shore. Prior to Blankvoort's effort, no Colonial had shot a 66 in 45 years. (Jay Randolph ('56) accomplished the feat at the 1957 Southern Conference Championship at the Danville (VA) Country Club). Ball's six-under-par round also tied Blankvoort's school record for most strokes under par in a single round.
Colonials' sophomore Charles Taylor (St. Lambert, Quebec/Gov. Dummer) was solid in posting his third Top 20 finish of the season with a 218 (74-70-74) to tie for 14th place.
