WASHINGTON, DC (March 11, 2002) - George Washington women's basketball accepted an invitation to compete in the 2002 Women's National Invitation Tournament and will host Delaware in their first round game at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, at Smith Center.
The Colonials will participate in their third-straight postseason tournament since the 1999-2000 season, and their eleventh postseason appearance in 13 years under Coach Joe McKeown. GW competes in the postseason NIT for only the second time in the school's history. The Colonials' first appearance was in the 1992-93 season when the Colonials posted an 0-3 record in Amarillo, TX. The NIT at that time was an eight-team round-robin tournament, which guaranteed each participating institution three games.
The Colonials (20-8, 15-1) are led by junior guard/forward Cathy Joens. The first team All-Conference member averaged 15.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest. Fellow first team selection, sophomore center Ugo Oha anchors the frontcourt for GW, and averaged 13.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game. Oha's 2.9 blocks per game average ranks seventh in the nation.
GW will face Delaware in a rematch of their 2000-01 preseason NIT game, when the Blue Hens visited Smith Center in the first round. The Colonials topped UD 78-56 in their season opener, and lost at No. 14 Virginia 72-66 in the second round of the preseason tournament.
Fans can purchase tickets for the NIT by calling Tickemaster 202/432-SEAT (7328) or the George Washington University Ticket Office at 202/994-6050. Adult tickets are priced at $10 and children at $6.
