KINGSTON, R.I. (Feb. 23) - George Washington posted another win today, this time against Rhode Island, in a close meet where team scores totaled 194.950 to 194.025. Colonial senior Devin McCalla (Dallas, TX/J.J. Pierce) managed first place performances on each apparatus, including a tie on the uneven bars. The Rams earned their highest score of the season and equaled the third-highest in team history in falling to visiting George Washington.
McCalla, who tied URI's Stephanie Clarke for first place on bars (9.825), was also awarded a 9.850 on beam, and a 9.900 on the floor exercise. Her score on vault marks her highest on that event for the season (9.850), while her win in the all-around with a score of 39.425 is her third all-around first place finish this season.
Other Colonials also out-performed the Rams and on the beam even grabbed 6 of the top 7 spots by the end of the day. Sophomore Lindsay Parks (Council Bluffs, IA/Abraham Lincoln) finished second on vault with a 9.825, her best of the season. Freshman Amber Melvin (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Morian) placed third on vault (9.700) and tied for second on the balance beam with a 9.825, her best in that event to date. Senior Jessica Mantak (Colonia, NJ/Wardlaw-Hartridge), who was named A-10 Performer of the Week on Monday, finished second in the all-around (39.075), tied for forth on the bars (9.775) and the beam (9.800), and placed third on the floor (9.850).
Ram junior JoAnna Judge tied for second on the balance beam with a 9.825 - the team's second-best mark of the year - and placed second in floor exercise with a 9.875. She's placed first or second on the floor in four of her last five meets. Rhode Island freshman Brooke Hamilton placed third in all-around with a 38.450 after tying for fourth on bars and floor and tying for sixth in vault.
The Colonials and the Rams will meet again March 23 when URI hosts the conference championships at Keaney Gymnasium. GW travels next to the Wolfpack Invite in Raleigh, NC on Friday, March 1.
