WASHINGTON, DC - Shooting guard Ricky Lucas (Herndon, VA/Herndon) has signed a national letter-of-intent with The George Washington University, head basketball coach Karl Hobbs has announced. He is GW's first signee for 2003-04.
The 6-5, 190-pound Lucas averaged 14 points and seven rebounds, three assists and a steal per game as a junior last year at Montrose Christian School in Rockville, MD. He was named All-Montgomery County honorable mention by the Montgomery Journal. The Mustangs posted a 23-6 (.793) during Lucas' junior season and won the Beltway championship under coach Stu Vetter. The Mustangs also won the Maryland Independent School Championship last season.
Lucas also played for the Fairfax Stars AAU squad where he starred at the adidas Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas last summer. He has had 36- and 38-point games in AAU competition.
Lucas played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, VA, where the Knights posted a combined 33-27 two-year record (17-14 as a sophomore, 16-13 as a freshman). He was named MVP of Red Cross Rotary Round Ball Classic Tournament in Charleston, SC, where he averaged 19.8 points in three games and scored a team-high 21 points in a 73-70 overtime win over Westchester High of Los Angeles. (Westchester finished the season with a 28-2 record and was ranked 15th in USA Today High School Boy's Basketball poll that year.) The Sporting News rated Lucas the 11th-best player in his class entering his sophomore year.
"GW got a steal in Ricky," Herndon coach Gary Hall said. "Most would consider him one of the top five seniors in the Washington area and I think he is the best senior. He will be a great fit at GW and Coach Hobbs is the type of coach Ricky will respond well to. For all of his accolades on the court, he is even better as a person."
"We're really excited about Rick," Hobbs said. "He's a terrific shooter, one of the top shooters in the country. He brings tremendous size for a 2-guard and he has the ability to handle the ball as well as shoot it. He's a great addition to our program."
