Basketball's Chris Monroe Named Preseason All-Conference First Team

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Atlantic 10 Conference coaches and media selected GW's Chris Monroe (Hyattsville, MD/Good Counsel) as a preseason first-team All-Conference pick it was announced at Atlantic 10 Media Day Thursday. In the same poll, Colonials freshman Omar Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Celestial Prep) was named to the preseason All-Rookie Team.
Monroe's 21.1 points-per-game average last season is the highest of all the preseason honorees and ranked 23rd in the nation.
Also making the preseason all-conference teams were two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Year David West of Xavier and first-team All-Conference pick Jameer Nelson of Saint Joseph's. They are joined by Romain Sato of Xavier - a second-team pick a year ago - and St. Bonaventure's Marques Green, a third-team All-Conference selection in 2001-02.
The second-team consists of Reggie Brown and Mike Skrocki of Richmond, Xavier's Lionel Chalmers, Brooks Hall of Dayton, and Temple's David Hawkins.
On the third-team are Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Anthony Anderson of Massachusetts, Mike Cleaves of La Salle, Dayton's Ramod Marshall and Keith Waleskowksi, and Alex Wesby of Temple.
The preseason All-Rookie team is comprised of John Blackgrove of Fordham, Temple's Keith Butler, Mike Lasme of Massachusetts, La Salle's Jermaine Thomas, and GW's Williams.
Green, Sato, and West were also named to the All-Defensive team, as were Tony Dobbins and Johnathan Collins of Richmond.
The GW men's team opens the 2002-03 season against Connecticut Monday (Nov. 25) at the Hartford Civic Center. The GW women's team opens its season Friday (Nov. 22) against Howard in a 7:00 p.m. game at Smith Center.
