Gymnastics Finishes Fourth At Regional

Washington, D.C. (April 7, 2001) The University of Georgia earned a total team score of 197.775 to win the Southeast Regional in Gainesville, FL this evening at the OÂ'Connell Center. GW finished fourth behind Georgia, the University of Florida and the University of Maryland. The Colonials finished with a total score of 194.675.
Junior Devin McCalla (Dallas, TX/ J.J. Pearce) finished tied for 21st on the vault with a score of 9.725 to pace the Colonials in that event. Sophomore Kacey Coyne (McLean, VA/ OÂ'Connell) tied for 25th with a score of 9.70.
Sophomore Melissa Suter (Chesapeake, VA/ Deep Creek) led the Colonials on the uneven bars. Suter finished tied for 10th with a career high score of 9.825. McCalla and fellow junior Jessica Mantak (Colonia, NJ/ Wardlaw-Hartridge) finished tied for 17th on the bars with a 9.750.
Mantak scored a 9.750 on the beam to lead the Colonials and tie for 18th place.
The Colonials had their best score on the floor exercise. McCalla led the way by finishing tied for fourth with a score of 9.90. Mantak and freshman Rachel Mann (Atlanta, GA/ Lakeside) tied for 10th with a 9.825.
McCalla finished eighth in the all-around with a total score of 39.100. Mantak finished 10th with a score of 38.900. Senior Darden Wilee (Chesapeake, VA/ Great Bridge) finished her GW career with a score of 38.825 in the all-around.
The Colonials finish the season with an overall record of 22-12. The team won its fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference Championship, set a new school record for total team score, and boasted the 2001 Atlantic 10 Coach and Performer of the Year. The Colonials lose Wilee and fellow captain Lindsey Ferris (Westlake, OH/ Magnificant), but McCalla, Mantak, Coyne, Mann, Suter and Jamie McNally (Old Bridge, NJ/ Bishop Ahr) all return as GW will try to win its fifth consecutive conference title in 2002.
