WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 25, 2001) Senior swimmer Wes Teter (Farmer?s Branch, TX/ R.L. Turner) and senior gymnast Darden Wilee (Chesapeake, VA/ Great Bridge) have been named Atlantic 10 Student Athletes of the Year in their respective sports, the conference office has announced. The duo leads a group of six Colonials who were named to the 2001 Atlantic 10 Winter Academic All-Conference team. Gymnasts Jessica Mantak (Colonia, NJ/ Wardlaw-Hartridge) and Devin McCalla (Dallas, TX/ J.J. Pearce), along with swimmers Jocelyn Finch (Olympia, WA/ Olympia) and Nell Friar (Oak Ridge, TN/ Oak Ridge) also were named to the team. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a grade-point average of at least a 3.00 and be a starter or key reserve. Voting was conducted by the A-10 sports information directors.
Teter maintains a 3.36 grade point average while majoring in Sociology. He was the 2001 Atlantic 10 champion in the 200-yd freestyle and holds the school record in that event (1:39.12). Teter was also a member of the 2001 Atlantic 10 champion 400-yd medley relay team and was named to the 2001 Atlantic 10 All-Conference team.
Wilee maintains a 3.06 grade point average while majoring in Exercise Science. She also interns as an athletic trainer at the National Cathedral School for Girls. Wilee was named the 2001 Atlantic 10 Performer of the Year after winning the all-around and uneven bars at the 2001 Verizon Atlantic 10 Championships. Wilee was also a co-captain for the Colonials, who won their fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship.
