WASHINGTON, DC (March 29) - The George Washington University women's soccer team has signed three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2001 season, head coach Tanya Vogel announced March 29.
All three individuals come to GW from the World Class club program out of Windsor, CT. World Class is a perennial powerhouse in Region 1 and captured the 1999 U16 Girls Snickers/USYSA National Championship.
The three student-athletes are:
Amanda Bednarz, D, Hebron, CT, Rham H.S., Club: World Class
"Amanda's passion to study the game will continue to take her to the next level. She is smart and makes good decisions as a defender. Her experience with World Class, along with her desire to continuously get better will not only put her on the field, but she will inspire her teammates. Amanda was recognized as an All-New England and an All-State high school player this past fall and we are elated to have her at GW," Vogel said.
Lindsay Bruno, M/D, Kensington, CT, The Loomis Chaffee School, Club: World
Class
"Lindsay will help us raise the bar at GW. She has the qualities of a field general and will help organize our backs and midfielders from day one. She has an outstanding defensive mind, but will not be limited to a defensive role. She may find herself in the center midfield in the role of playmaker. Lindsay has a strong resume including time in the Region 1 pool and being named All-State in high school. We are extremely excited to have Lindsay as part of our incoming class," Vogel said.
Kelly Lawten, M/D, New Canaan, CT, New Canaan H.S., Club: World Class
"Kelly is an extremely steady player. She is athletic, has excellent size and is strong on the ball. She can play both outside back and outside midfield for us. With her athleticism and knowledge of the game, she has the potential to impact this program immediately. Kelly is also a member of the National Champion World Class team and a Connecticut State team player. She will be an outstanding addition to our program," Vogel said.
GW finished 5-14 overall in 2000 and tied for sixth in the Atlantic 10 with a 4-6 record. The Colonials will return 21 players from last year's squad including forwards Erin Coppedge (Annapolis, MD/ St. Mary's), an All-Atlantic10 Second team selection last year, and Kim Warner (North York, Ontario/ St. Joseph's), an All-Atlantic10 Rookie team selection.
