George Washington Wins Fourth Consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 24, 2001)  George Washington senior Darden Wilee won the all-around title and junior Devin McCalla set an Atlantic 10 Championship record on the beam to lead GW to its fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship this afternoon at Smith Center. GW finished with a score of 194.975, Massachusetts was second with a score of 193.825, followed by Rhode Island (191.000) and Temple (188.625).

George Washington junior Jamie McNally won the vault with a career high score of 9.800. McCalla and Rhode Islands Missy Bockstoce finished tied for second with a score of 9.750 and Wilee finished tied for fourth with Rhode Islands Sivan Atmzi and Massachusetts Tracy Chew with a score of 9.700.

Wilee was also crowned the Atlantic 10 champion on the bars with a score of 9.825. Wilee was followed by Bockstoce and Massachusetts Mellory Giberson, who tied for second with scores of 9.800, respectively. George Washingtons Melissa Suter and Atmzi tied for fourth with scores of 9.775.

McCalla captured the Atlantic 10 title on the beam with a championships record of 9.950. McCallas score broke the old record of 9.925 set by Massachusetts Anita Sanyal in 1999. GWs Jessica Mantak and Massachusetts Jobi DanSy tied for second with a score of 9.925. Mary Moore of Massachusetts was fourth with a 9.850.

McCalla also was crowned Atlantic 10 champion of the floor exercise, finishing with a score of 9.950. DanSy finished second with a 9.90 and GWs Rachel Mann, Rhode Islands Kelly Labowitz and Massachusetts Megan Donoghue finished tied for third with scores of 9.875.

For her efforts Wilee was named 2001 Atlantic 10 Performer of the Year. Wilee, McCalla, McNally and Mantak were all named Atlantic 10 All-Conference from GW. Massachusetts was represented on the All-Conference team by DanSy and Giberson. Giberson also was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. Missy Bockstoce of Rhode Island was named All-Conference. GWs Margie Foster-Cunningham earned the third Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year award of her career.
