WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 9, 2001) — The GW gymnastics team defeated the University of Maryland, 194.550 - 192.275, on Thursday, February 8 at the Ritchie Coliseum on the campus of the University of Maryland. GW’s team score was their highest of the season.
Senior Darden Wilee (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) led the way by tying for first place in the all-around with Maryland’s Lisa Mealey. Wilee finished with a score of 39.025. Sophomore Kacey Coyne (McLean, VA/O’Connell) won the vault with a career-high 9.825, followed closely by junior Devin McCalla (Dallas, TX/J.J. Pearce) in second place with a 9.800. McCalla also won the floor exercise with a 9.900, followed by by junior Jessica Mantak (Colonia, NJ/Wardlaw-Hartridge) and Wilee, who tied for second with a 9.825.
The Colonials return home tonight, February 9, to face Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m. The Rams are led by the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Marissa Medal, and are widely considered the most serious threat to dethrone the Colonials in their quest for a fourth straight Atlantic 10 title.
