WASHINGTON, DC (February 25, 2001) - Erica Lawrence paced four Colonials in double figures with 17 points and a season-high six steals as George Washington beat the Rams in their season finale at Smith Center this afternoon 81-68.
The Colonials (20-8, 14-2) and Rams (11-17, 4-12) battled back and forth throughout a first half that was marked by three ties and six lead changes. Both teams shot well from the floor, including a combined 13-23 from beyond the arc. The Rams took an eight-point lead with five minutes play on a layup by URI's Yatar Kuyateh.
However, following a timeout, GW's defense pressed the Rams into seven turnovers in the remaining five minutes, converting them into 12 points in a 23-9 run to finish the half with a 43-37 lead. Sophomore guard Lindsey Davidson capped the run off with a three-point shot off the glass after stealing the inbound pass with two seconds on the clock. Davidson went 4-4 from beyond the arc on the half, finishing the game with 15 points on 5-7 shooting.
The Rams would make a charge at the beginning of the second period, using an 8-2 run in the first four minutes to tie the game at 45. The Colonials responded in kind, rattling off a 20-2 run over the next five minutes, harassing URI into nine turnovers and converting them into 14 points. The Colonials extended this lead to a game-high 24 points, leading 77-53 with 5:21 left to play, before GW cleared their bench and subbed out their seniors who were playing in their last game at the Smith Center with three minutes remaining.
