Gymnastics Wins Second Straight Towson Invitational

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 17, 2001) - Junior Devin McCalla (Dallas, TX/ J.J. Pearce) won the all-around title for the second consecutive year and the Colonials set a meet record with a total score of 195.175 to win the 16th annual Towson Invitational before a crowd of 1,199 at the Towson Center on Saturday afternoon.
McCalla finished with an all-around score of 39.350, which included a meet record 9.900 on the beam. McCalla also finished fourth on the bars (9.775) and tied for second on the vault (9.80) and the floor exercise (9.875).
Sophomore Kacey Coyne (McLean, VA/O’Connell) continued to dominate the vault by winning the event with a 9.825. Coyne has now won the vault in four of the five GW meet’s this season.
The Colonials won the meet on the balance beam, scoring a team total of 48.95. In addition to McCalla’s first place finish, senior Darden Wilee (Chesapeake, VA/ Great Bridge) and junior Kelley Banks (Council Bluffs, IA/ Saint Albert) turned in strong efforts to help GW’s cause. Wilee tied for second place with a 9.825 while Banks finished sixth with a 9.775.
GW will try to win it’s fourth meet in a row on Monday, February 19 at 8:00 p.m. against Maryland at Smith Center.
