Vishniakova Records Double-double to Lead George Washington
WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 11) - The George Washington women's basketball team held off a late charge by the St. Jospehs Hawks to win 63-58, and snap a two-game losing streak.
The Colonials (17-8, 11-2) overcame a slow start, trailing for the majority of the first half. The Hawks were led by junior forward Susan Moran who scored a game-high 27 points, 14 occurring in the first half. SJU (13-11, 7-6) took advantage of GWs cold shooting, extending their lead to as much as nine points before the Colonials went on a 16-4 run in the final six minutes of the half. GW harassed the Hawks on defense, forcing low-percentage shots, and pressing SJU into three turnovers in the final minute and a half to take the lead into the lockerroom, 29-26.
The Colonials started the second half the same way they finished the first, running on the Hawks and outscoring them 25-7 over the first 10 minutes to take a game-high 18 point lead. GW forced five turnovers over the span of the run and converted 10 field goals to take control of the game. Short jumpers by sophomore Erica Lawrence, freshman Ugo Oha and junior Elena Vishniakova keyed the strong post play during the run.
The Hawks would not go quietly, and went on a run of their own, outscoring GW 19-6 over the next seven minutes to pull within four points with less than three minutes remaining in the game. However, the Colonials defense regrouped, and the Hawks were unable to pull any closer.
Vishniakova led four Colonials in double figures with 12 points, and grabbed 10 rebounds to record her second double-double of the season. Vishniakova also added three assists and blocks in her 34 minutes of play. Senior guard Corrin Reid also performed well, coming off the bench to play stellar defense, recording three steals, three assists and one block. Reid was everywhere, disrupting the passing lanes and causing the Hawks headaches the entire contest.
George Washington returns to Washington, DC to finish the regular season with a three-game home- stand starting with UMass on Friday, February 16, at 7:00 pm.
