WASHINGTON, DC (Oct. 28) - George Washington sophomore goalkeeper Christine O'Malley (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) made five saves to record her third shutout of the season and senior forward Tiffany Williams (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) added a goal and two assists to lead GW to a surprising 3-0 victory over Massachusetts this afternoon, Oct. 28, at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The victory improves GW's record to 7-9 overall and to 4-5 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. UMass falls to 10-4 overall and to 7-2 in the Atlantic 10.
Buoyed by the Senior Day activities prior to the match, the Colonials came out and played inspired soccer from the beginning. Redshirt sophomore Kim Warner (North York, Ontario, Canada/St. Joseph's) got the Colonials started at the 1:13 mark when she took a feed from Williams and beat her defender on the left side and then darted across the middle before sliding a shot to the lower right corner of the net past UMass keeper, Kelly Nigh.
The Colonials kept up the pressure on the UMass defense, but could not cash in again until the 40th minute. Williams set up freshman Meghan Cracker (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge) in the box and Cracker beat Nigh to the lower right corner of the net to record her fourth goal of the season.
After the break, the Colonials continued on the attack as the speed and skill of Warner and Williams proved to much for the Minutewomen to handle on this day. In the 54th minute, sophomore Caite Terranova (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) served a ball to the right side of the box that Williams was able to run down. Williams lofted a beautiful ball to the far corner of the net that UMass keeper Julie Podhrasky, who came in at the beginning of the second half, could not reach. It was Williams' first goal of the season and the eighth of her GW career.
The Colonials made the three goals stand up as they fended off all of the Minutewomen's chances in the second half to preserve the shutout.
The Colonials finish the regular season next weekend with a pair of road matches against Atlantic 10 foes. On Friday, Nov. 3, GW travels to Pittsburgh to face the Duquesne Dukes at 3:00 p.m.. The Colonials then travel to St. Bonaventure to face the Bonnies on Sunday, Nov. 5, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
