Women's Basketball Downs Duquesne in Atlantic 10 Opener

PITTSBURGH, PA - Duquesne (7-5, 0-1) fell to visiting George Washington (7-5, 1-0) 77-58 in the Atlantic 10 season opener Wednesday at the Palumbo Center.
The Dukes were led by Jaime Vander Zanden with 17 points and Beth Friday's 11 markers while George Washington's Lindsey Davidson posted a team-high 15 points in the win.
The Colonials took an early 12-4 lead three minutes in before the Dukes came within a 16-18 reach with 12:51 remaining on a 9-2 run. George Washington answered back with a 10-2 run for a 36-24 lead - its largest of the half. GW held a 41-34 advantage at the intermission.
George Washington opened the second 20-minutes out-scoring the Dukes 21-9 for a 62-46 advantage at the 5:54 mark. Duquesne would not get within a 14-point reach thereafter with the last being 58-72 with 1:48 showing. The Colonials went to the line five time in the final 3:04 connecting on 9-10 free throws for the 77-58 final.
Duquesne was out-shot from the field .467 (21-45) to .491 (28-57) and was out-rebounded 26-to-30 for the game. The Dukes led the game shooting .813 (13-16) from the charity stripe.
