Alexander Leads Charge With 23
AMHERST, MA - (January 20, 2001) The Colonials never trailed in a dominating performance at Mullins Center, avenging last season's road loss.
Tri-captain Kristeena Alexander put on a clinic for the 613 spectators, scoring 23 points on 7-11 shooting, including 3-5 from beyond the arc, and a number of athletic slashing layups that left defenders in her wake. The entire offense fed off Alexander who also notched seven assists and collected three steals. The 5'6" guard also had her second block of the season, and led the team in rebounds with five.
The Colonials capitalized on the Minutewomen's poor offensive execution, forcing 24 turnovers for the contest and converting them into 21 points. UMass only made 4 field goals in the first half, and was held to 16 points, a season low output for one half of play. Despite their cold shooting, UMass stayed within 12 points until a six minute, 18-2 run by the Colonials to finish the half. The Minutewomen would add only nine more field goals the rest of the game, shooting a dismal 25% (13-52) for the contest.
Where the Minutewomen struggled, the Colonials excelled. GW torched the nets for 41 points in the first half, on 15-30 shooting, 5-10 from beyond the arc. Their hot shooting continued into the second half, when the Colonials burst out of the gate with a 12-2 run that led to a game-high 38-point lead.
Sophomore guard Lindsey Davidson and forward Erica Lawrence continued their solid conference play, scoring in double figures. Davidson was deadly from beyond the arc, hitting 4-9 and totaling 16 points and adding four assists and four rebounds on the day.
Lawrence followed up her stellar performance against Fordham on Wednesday, with a 12 point effort today. Lawrence shot 5-10 from the field, and a perfect 2-2 from 3-point land. Freshman center Ugo Oha also played well, scoring 11 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor. Oha also added two more blocks to bring her league-leading total to 38. Oha is ranked 15th nationally in blocks per game at 2.1.
With their four-game roadtrip over, the Colonials (12-6, 6-0) return home to the friendly confines of Smith Center to face Duquesne University on Wednesday, January 24. GW beat the Dukes earlier this month at Duquesne, 77-58.
