Lawrence Scorches Net For 27 Points
NEW YORK, NY (Jan. 18) - Sophomore forward Erica Lawrence tied a career-high with 27 points on 9-10 shooting, as the Colonials put it all together against the Fordham Rams in an 89-61 win Jan. 18.
George Washington (11-6, 5-0) continued it's dominance in Atlantic 10 play tonight facing a team that has never defeated them. Fordham (4-12, 1-4) was 0-5 lifetime against the Colonials dating back to 1996. The trend continued, with GW controlling the pace for the majority of the game.
With a combination of excellent shooting and stifling defense GW dominated the action in both halves. Shooting a torrid 56.4% from the field, including 46.2% from beyond the arc, the Colonials scored at will against the Rams. Lawrence was in top form, hitting from all over the floor, and sinking eight straight before her first and only miss of the night, which came halfway through the second half.
Junior forward Elena Vishniakova also had a solid night, scoring 14 points on 6-12 shooting with two blocks. Vishniakova is averaging 12.4 points per game in conference play, and has scored in double-digits in four of the five games.
The team clicked on both ends of the court tonight, pressing and forcing the Rams into 25 turnovers. The Colonials capitalized, scoring 33 points off the Fordham miscues. GW would also get 29 points off the bench, receiving quality minutes from all 12 active players. Freshman center Alexis Darling scored a career-high six points in four minutes. Darling in fact, scored GW's last six points of the contest.
The game marked a reunion between guard Kristeena Alexander and her former coach at George Mason University, Jim Lewis. Lewis left GMU to coach the Washington Mystic in 1997-98. Alexander played for Lewis in the 1996-97 season before transferring to GW. Alexander saw limited time in order to rest her for the upcoming UMass game, but had a very productive first half, notching six assists and grabbing three steals in 16 minutes of play.
The Colonials next travel north to UMass for a Saturday
