Philadelphia, PA - (January 13, 2001) Villanova's Trish Juhline went 5-10 from beyond the arc, and hit two key threes in the final five minutes, to preserve the Wildcat's win over George Washington University, 65-63.
In a game marked by tough defense, the Colonials and Wildcats battled the entire contest. The two teams were tied six times, and exchanged the lead five times. Villanova and GW started the game out cold from the field, shooting a combined 21-55 (38.1%) from the field in the first half, 16 turnovers and nine steals. This led to the Colonials only scoring 23 points for the period, their lowest output for in a first half all season, and trailed 28-23.
GW came quickly out of the gate in the second half, going on a 6-0 run to take the lead 29-28 after the opening two minutes. The remainder of the half would belong to Villanova, who kept turning back any run the Colonials could muster and eventually stretch their lead to eight with less than a minute to play.
GW would not go quietly, and through a combination of Villanova missed free throws, and quick offensive production, the Colonials cut the lead down to two with 2.1 seconds left to play. GW's Kristeena Alexander rebounded Villanova's Stephanie Baker missed free throw, and launch a desperation three-point shot from inside halfcourt that just fell shy of the mark.
The Colonials (9-6, 3-0) return to conference play on Monday, remaining in Philadelphia to face the La Salle Explore.
