Shorthanded Colonials Lose In Overtime
9/20/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
The Patriots struck first when GMUs Brian Blackburn dribbled through the Colonial defense to score an unassisted goal in the 11th minute. GW was able to tie the game eight minutes later on a point-blank shot by Jason Halloway on a cross by Ricardo Forno who recorded his first of two assists on the day.
GMU was able to get back on the scoreboard in the 65th minute against a shorthanded GW team, who lost Jason Evans in the 59th minute when he received his second yellow card of the match. GMUs Keith Nakai scored on a feed from Charlie Snee in front of the Colonial goal.
Even down a man, GW was able to pull even on a free kick in the 72nd minute when Forno notched his second assist on the day setting up Matt Osborne on a designed free kick play. Osborne put home a pinpoint shot from 40 yards into the upper-right corner of the goal out of the reach of Patriots keeper Rich Gaskin.
After neither team could gain the advantage in the first overtime, the hard-fought match became a battle of attrition when the Colonials lost their second player of the match in the 104th minute. Forno received his second caution of the day on a hard foul, and was ejected leaving GW two men down going into the second overtime.
The Colonials, already taxed from close to a hour of play a man down, were unable to stop the constant pressure the Patriots applied early in the second extra period. GW made a costly error in the 109th minute fouling a GMU player in their penalty area. Eduardo Lima, the Patriots leading scorer, converted a penalty kick in the 110th minute sealing GMUs victory.
GW falls to 3-2-1, and will face Georgia Southern at South Riding field at 1:00 pm, Saturday, September 20.
