WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University has announced its 2000-2001 women's basketball schedule, which features a match-up with last year's NCAA champion University of Connecticut. GW may play as many as 11 teams which appeared in the 2000 NCAA Tournament during the regular season including two of the Final Four teams.
The Colonials also will participate in this year's Preseason WNIT (Nov. 10-20), opening at home against Delaware. If GW gets past the Blue Hens (Nov. 10), a likely second-round opponent is Virginia (Nov. 12). Other Preseason WNIT participants include 2000 NCAA Tournament teams Louisiana Tech, Texas, Purdue and Tulane.
GW will face NCAA 2000 women's basketball champion UConn at Hartford Civic Center on Wednesday, Nov. 29. GW also will play in the Coca-Cola Classic at Rutgers University over the Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 25-26) against Washington State. If GW defeats the Cougars, the Colonials could face 2000 Final Four participant Rutgers in the championship game.
In other non-conference action, GW has a busy December facing cross-town rival Georgetown and Seton Hall on the road, while hosting Iowa, Mount St. Mary's, Towson and North Carolina State in the friendly confines of the Charles E. Smith Center where GW posted a 15-0 record last season.
In A-10 Conference play, GW will play home-and-home series with Duquesne, Xavier, St. Joseph's, La Salle, Massachusetts and Temple. GW also will host St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island while playing Fordham and Dayton on the road.
Coach Joe McKeown returns for his 12th season at GW with a team of proven veterans and exciting newcomers. With A-10 All-Conference players Petra Dubovcova (Prievidza, Slovakia/Gymnazium V. B. N. Prievidza), Kristeena Alexander (Hempstead, NY/Christ The King) and Erica Lawrence (Nyack, NY/Nyack), and a recruiting class that is ranked 11th nationally by Women's Basketball News Service, McKeown and the Colonials look to continue their tradition of excellence.
