Swimming and Diving Takes Fourth at Atlantic 10s

The George Washington University men's and women's swimming and diving concluded the 1999-2000 season with a pair of fourth-place team finishes at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Held in Buffalo, NY, February 17-19, 2000, the Colonials collected eight championship titles. Virginia Tech won both the men's and women's conference championship titles.
Leading the GW men was senior Tim Champney. Champney won the 100-yard backstroke (48.46) and 200-yard backstroke (1:47.77) titles for the fourth straight year and led GW to titles in the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays. Senior David Simonetti won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 49.38. Senior Juan Bocanegra collected a championship title in the 200-yard individual medley (1:50.20) and placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (49.53). Senior Rich de Wet defended his 50-yard freestyle title for the second straight year, winning in a time of 20.75. Junior Alvaro Fortuny set a new team record in a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (55.85). Freshman David Dillehay finished second in the mile with a time of 15:56.99 and senior Nick Hopman finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.25) and third in the 100-yard back (50.77). Diver Jeremy Hoders placed second on the one-meter springboard (436.15) and third in the three-meter event (436.90).
On the women's side, sophomore Nell Friar captured the 100-yard breaststroke title (1:05.41) and finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.86). Sophomore Jocelyn Finch placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.78), seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.89) and fifth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:30.78). Senior Jennifer Skinner finished third in the mile (17:20.81) and fifth in the 500-yard free (5:04.48). Junior diver Lynne McCormick placed second on the three-meter springboard (421.90) and fourth in the one-meter event (332.80).
