Aguilar Leads GW Past Duquesne, 61-42

PITTSBURGH, PA (Feb. 27) -- Senior guard Elisa Aguilar led all scorers with 16 points as GW dominated Duquesne, 61-42, in the regular season finale in A. J. Palumbo Center. GW (23-4, 14-2) claimed the top overall seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament with the win after clinching first place in the West Division with Thursday night's victory.
Junior forward Petra Dubovcova tallied 15 points for GW on 5-7 shooting from the field. Freshman forward Erica Lawrence scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked four shots.
GW's defense smothered Duquesne (8-19, 4-12), forcing the Dukes into committing 26 turnovers and limiting Duquesne to 24% (12-50) shooting from the field after shooting 21.4% (6-28) in the second half. Duquesne's shooting performance was the worst of the season by a GW oppoent. No Duquesne players scored in double figures.
After Duquesne opened the game with an 8-2 run four minutes into the contest, GW countered with an 11-0 run to take a 13-8 lead on an Aguilar trey with 13:47 remaining in the first half.
Duquesne managed to trim the GW lead 17-15 on a pair of Jaime Vander Zanden free throws with 7:10 remaining in the half. GW answered once again with 12-2 run capped by a pair of Aguilar free throws with 2:43 remaining that gave GW a 29-17 lead. The Colonials closed the first half with a 31-19 advantage.
GW jumped on Duquesne quickly to begin the second half, scoring the first seven points of the half to take a 38-19 lead. GW held Duquesne at bay throughout the rest of the game and led by as much as 60-37 with three minutes remaining to play.
GW opens play in the Atlantic 10 Tournament Saturday at noon with a quarterfinal contest against the winner of the Temple (East 4) vs. La Salle (West 5) game on Friday.
