WASHINGTON (AP) - SirValiant Brown and Chris Monroe shook off a poor first half as George Washington came back to beat Virginia Tech 71-68 in an Atlantic 10 game Thursday.
Monroe, who made just one of six shots in the first half, scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half as the Colonials (12-12, 6-5) came back from a 52-43 deficit. Brown, who made just three of 15 shots in the first half, had 15 of his 22 points in the second half.
Dennis Mims had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Brendan Dunlop added 15 points for the Hokies, who have not won at GW since 1981.
GW, now tied for second with Xavier in the west division, trailed by 10 points late in the first half.
But the Colonials took the lead at 62-61 on an off-balanced shot under the basket by Monroe. After a Tech turnover, Monroe hit a 3-pointer to give GW a 65-61 lead.
Brian Chase's 3-pointer for Tech cut the lead to 69-68, but Mike King (13 points) made a basket with 16 seconds left to give GW a 71-68 lead. Dunlop missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied the game.
