Lawrence Records First Career Double-Double in Win
WASHINGTON, DC (December 21, 2000) - The Colonials extended their home win streak to 24, the fifth longest active streak in the nation, as they crushed Towson University in an early evening game today.
Sophomore forward Erica Lawrence continued her strong play, setting career highs with 27 points and 10 rebounds recording her first career double-double. Lawrence was unguardable, shooting 12-15 from the floor and cleaning up the boards on both ends of the court.
Towson (0-9) scored first in the game and held a 4-2 advantage a minute and a half into the contest. The Colonials then went on a 28-0 run that spanned the next six minutes to essentially put the game away with 12 minutes left in the first half. GW (6-4) held the Tigers to 18 points for the half, stifling the smaller team with swarming defense, forcing 15 turnovers and pulling away by 31 points before the break.
GW came storming out of the gate in the second half, extending their lead to 45 points with a 25-8 run in the first 10 minutes. Coach McKeown cleared the bench in both the first and second halves, allowing the reserve players to gain some valuable experience. As with the previous game against Mount St. Mary's, every player who saw time scored. Four players scored in double figures, and the team shot a season best 54 percent from the field (37-68), forced a season high 28 turnovers, and matched a season high of 13 steals.
The Colonials will put their win streak on the line in their next game when they host No. 13 North Carolina State on December 28, at 7:00 pm.
