Colonials Lose Marathon Match In Penalty Shoot Out
11/3/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
Kingston, RI - (November 3, 2000) - The Colonials and Flyers picked up where they left off on October 29 when they battled to a 2-2 tie. The teams met again in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship. Between today's match and their last meeting, GW and Dayton have played 266 scoreless minutes. In the end, victory was decided by 10 penalty shots.
At today's Atlantic 10 semi-final championship match, Nick Parypinski (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) stopped everything that the Flyers shot at him, battling with athletic saves and fearless abandon to blunt the Dayton attack. Parypinski made nine saves on 24 shots by the Flyers through regulation and four overtime periods, sending the match to a sudden-victory shoot out.
Per the NCAA format for tournament matches, the two teams selected five players to take turns with shots on goal. The Colonials converted their first four shots past Dayton keeper Jeff Krempec. Parypinski made a save on the second Flyers shot by Patrick Wirtz that was called back by the official who believed Parypinski had jumped too early on the kick. Wirtz converted his second chance and the Flyers made their remaining three shots against Parypinski.
With the unimaginable pressure on his shoulders, freshman back Sean Ross (Tacarigua, Trinidad) took the Colonials last shot with the hope of sending the game to another five penalty shots. Ross, shot the ball to the lower left corner. Krempec guessed correctly and made a sprawling save to give Dayton the victory and send them to the Sunday's championship match against tonight's winner of the URI - Massachusetts game.
