GW Picks Up Victory in Preseason WNIT First Round Game
Washington, DC - (November 10, 2000) - The Colonials began their 2000-01 season with some minor jitters, falling behind 0-6, failing to score in the first three and a half minutes of the game. GW asserted themselves going on a 18-2 run over the next six minutes, building a lead they would not relinquish.
The Fightin' Blue Hens lived up to their nickname, out-rebounding the Colonials 42-40 despite their smaller overall size. However, GW's offensive and defensive pressure was too much for Delaware to handle. The Colonials trapped and pressed the Blue Hens into 27 turnovers on the night, allowing GW to capitalize in transition. Coach McKeown was impressed with Delaware's overall quickness however, and believe they will do well this season.
"We did not look past Delaware tonight," stated McKeown, "We were very concerned about them coming here with a lot of experience. I was impressed at how quick they were, because I think we're quick...Delaware did a great job getting back on defense."
The Colonials played with an excellent balance of outside and inside scoring, shooting 50 percent from behind the arc, and 45 percent from the floor overall. Freshman center Ugo Oha had an outstanding night recording a double-double in her first collegiate game. Oha scored 14 points and collected 10 rebounds in 24 minutes of play.
Seniors Corrin Reid and Kristeena Alexander led the Colonials in scoring with 15 points apiece, with both guards clicking from behind the arc, shooting a combined 5-7 from three-point land. Reid was a spark off the bench, scoring 10 points in the first half to help hold off the Blue Hens.
The Colonials (1-0) will next travel to Charlottesville, VA to face No. 15 University of Virginia on Sunday, November 12 at 7:30 pm. The Cavaliers were victorious over Mt. Saint Mary's 100-61 to advance to the second round.
