GW Clinches A-10 Tournament Berth With Duquesne Loss
Washington, DC (October 27, 2000) - The Colonials entered today's match against Xavier controlling their own destiny, knowing a victory would put them one step closer to returning to Atlantic 10 post-season play after an eight-year absence.
George Washington responded to the challenge by dominating play at South Riding Field for the majority of the match. The Musketeers scored first in the 19th minute when Josh Hammerschmidt floated a header over Colonial goalkeeper Nick Parypinski (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake). Parypinski had another solid outing making two saves on six Xavier shots.
The Colonials struck back off a corner kick from Riccardo Forno (Toronto, Ontario/James Cardinal McGuigan) which Jason Holloway (Milwaukee, WI/Marquette Univ. HS) crossed to Matt Pilkington (Manchester, England/Sheffield Hallam Univ.) who put it between the pipes for GW's first score.
Colonials' team scoring leader Matt Osborne (Bingham, Notts, England/Toothill Comprehensive School) put a second goal on the board with a penalty kick in the 42nd minute when Pilkington received a hard foul in the box from a Xavier defender.
GW closed the door in the second half applying the pressure early. In the 48th minute Osborne made a long cross to Gregg Friedman (Holland, PA/Council Rock) who headed it toward the mouth of the goal where Ted Tucker (Sylvania, OH/St. John's Jesuit) redirected the shot past Xavier goalkeeper Paul Wesseling. The Colonials added a late score in the 80th minute when Andre Cardim (Miami, FL/Gulliver Prep) put home a deflection off a shot on goal from Pilkington.
With the win and Duquesne's 2-1 overtime loss to Temple today, the Colonials clinched a berth in the Atlantic 10 tournament. The Dukes mathematically eliminated themselves from the post-season race with the loss to the Owls. GW (9-5-2, 6-3-0 A-10) closes out the regular season on Sunday, October 29, with a home match against league-leading Dayton (12-3-0, 7-1-0 A-10).
