St. Bonaventure Steals One from Women's Soccer, 3-1

The Colonials seemed in control throughout the first half, outshooting the Bonnies 10-4, but the match remained scoreless. GW's persistence finally paid off at the 51:35 mark, as Erin Coppedge (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) was the benefactor of a great play by junior Tiffany Williams (Sykesville, MD/Liberty). Williams gained control deep inside the Bonnies end and made several good moves to beat her defender. The talented junior was then able to get a strong shot on the Bonnies goalkeeper Karen Cunningham, who stopped the shot, but could not control the rebound and Coppedge was able to score her 12th goal of the year.
The Colonials seemed on their way to a fifth conference win until a defensive breakdown led to St. Bonaventure's first goal. Maureen Elliott served the ball deep into the Colonials end of the field and Twardzik got behind the defense to break in alone on goalkeeper Christine O'Malley (Davis, CA/ Davis Senior). Twardzik was able to beat a diving O'Malley to tie the score 1-1 at the 74:33 mark.
With momentum now on their side, the Bonnies were able to seize the opportunity and took the lead for good at 81:29. Elliott again served the ball deep into GW's end and Twardzik was able to run it down and beat O'Malley for a 2-1 lead. Twardzik completed the hat trick at the 85:12 mark when she again came in alone on O'Malley and beat the freshman goalkeeper for a 3-1 St. Bonaventure lead. The Colonials attempt at a comeback was thwarted by the strong play of Cunningham, who made several key saves down the stretch to preserve the victory for the Bonnies.
GW will look to rebound on the road at Xavier on Friday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m.
